Eastern Standard Restaurant & Bar Review

Eastern Standard
My Opinions:  I came straight here from my late-night flight back from Colorado and was thrilled to enjoy a hot quality meal ... a treat that truly warmed my heart after dealing with the holiday travelers and their "baggage" (ugh!).

The bar was busy per usual, with an extensive and (overly) creative drink list, a good looking mature crowd, and their ever-patient, professional and friendly bartenders. The food here is very good; I especially like coming here for lunch. Be sure to sit outside when you can to people watch - they even have heat lamps to help during the winter months.

     Try:  ES Cubano
     Skip: Seared Salmon

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters - Steak Tartare - Eggs Benedict - Frisee aux Lardons - Chicken Chopped Salad - Cubano - Standard Burger - Foie Gras - Charcuterie Plate - Breakfast Breads - Grilled Cheese - Fried Calamari - Grilled Swordfish - Roasted Chicken Breast - Hanger Steak Frites -  Pear, Duck Confit Flatbread - Chocolate Hazelnut Terrine - Panna Cotta - Steak and Cheese Sandwich

The Avenue Grill Restaurant Review

The Avenue Grill
My Opinions:  I'm here visiting family for the Christmas holiday and, as a tradition, we try a new Denver restaurant each year. The Avenue Grill was quite a fine find.

I was first impressed with the interior - it was warm, inviting, and a bit fancier than I had imagined given the exterior (love that!). I did get a peak at the bar that looked like a fun time! Once seated, the service was excellent (friendly, attentive and knowledgeable) and the menu was enticing. Not only did they offer great food choices, many with a Thai flair, they also could make most dishes gluten free, they had a vegetarian option AND they had a late night menu!

The food tasted great and the cocktail menu was creative; I would definitely come back here. What a great Christmas Eve dinner!

Try:  Ravioli - Filet - Grilled Salmon
     Skip:  Tiramisu Roll

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Fondue Style Smoked Cheddar - Chicken and Spinach Potstickers - Tempura Prawns - Wild Mushroom Ravioli - Charbroiled Ribeye - Grilled Salmon - Tiramisu Roll - Crème Brulee

Southwest Airline Review

SOUTHWEST AIRLINE

My Opinions:  WOW - I just realized how much I like Jet Blue

I did not know that there were major airlines still in operation that employed the "don't-cut-the-line" approach to boarding, fight-for-your-seat assignments, no televisions, tight legroom, anti-handicap-sized bathrooms, and no food to purchase sustenance-program! (If you're rolling your eyes, then roll away, because I was starving.)

This was certainly one of my most unpleasant flight experiences that I can remember. It is family-friendly ... rather, family-heavy ... but the prices have risen to the point that any other airline I can think of will be my next go-to. Also, unless you are extremely particular to which tiny seat you want, paying their upgrade fee is ineffective. <DING!>

RumBa Bar Review

RumBa at the InterContinental Boston
My Opinions:  I've been coming here since it opened and it's a great place to drink and socialize with an attactive mix of successful Bostonians and visitors. You can trust there will be a decent weekend crowd, and expect a smaller local group during the week.

The main bar and lounge is attractive with a U-Shaped setup and lots of seating in the lounge. (I recommend not looking out into their pastel-like dining room, as it is a stark contrast to the swanky bar feel.) Though RumBa focuses on rum, they do offer a full bar of all the high-end spirits ... they even have sugar cane as a garnish for some of the cocktails!

I have yet to do an event in the red-themed Champagne Bar, but I would since the service is fairly good. I believe the private room is nice for a small group of 25-30 people.

China Sky Restaurant Review

China Sky
My Opinions:  Feels like home ... this is an unexpected find in my hometown of Winchester, MA. And it's still popular after all these years, so you know the food is good!

The service is informal, "You ready to order? What you want?" style, but it comes with a smile and you can always order slowly if you don't want your food to all come out at once.  Also, you should be aware that they don't have a full liquor license, so it's cordials, beer and wine only.

The appetizers and meals are of very good quality and flavor, but the maki was not. I have yet to try the sushi/sashimi, and, even though it was not a "bad" experience, I am not encouraged to do so. We'll see if I'm feeling curious next visit!

Towne Restaurant & Bar Review

Towne Stove and Spirits
My Opinions:  I told you I'd still come here for drinks even if the food didn't get a hold on me! Tonight was just that: Baja Breezes, and, given the snow storm, there was still a nice crowd in the front bar area.

The bartenders are great, and I had great service (again!).  The crowd is still hopping for after-work drinks, dinner and socializing, so come get your flirt on! You'll find that people here also frequent Abe & Louie's and Sonsie.  Speaking of, I came from dinner at Abe & Louie's to here, and I've actually been wondering how Sonsie's is doing ...

Try:  Bacon Sandwich - Lobster & Corn Pizza
     Skip:  Foie Gras - Mosaic

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Iceberg/baby - Tuna Belly - Tartare - Crostini's - Lobster Popovers - Ravioli - Duck Crisp - Sausage & Pepperoni Pizza - Bacon Sandwich - Lobster & Corn w/Honeyed Ricotta Pizza - Foie Gras - Beet Carpaccio - Salmon - Peking Chicken - Beef Short Ribs Crisp Tender - Pavlova - Warm Dark Chocolate w/Cherry Gelato - Toasted Hazelnut - Baja Breeze - Frozen Vanilla Mosaic - Chocolate Pudding - Sorbet

Abe & Louie's Restaurant & Bar Review

Abe & Louie's
My Opinions: Dinner was fantastic tonight. I really like sitting downstairs (you get to see all the bar action), and the management got me a booth next to the fireplace which made the meal that much better. It's the little touches that are so extra special!

I was introduced to a "signature" cocktail here tonight, the flirtini, and it was turning heads. It was very good (aka very strong) and, even though I'm not a fan of sweet drinks, it did taste delicious.

The cuts of meat have remained top-notch, the greens are crisp and clean, and the service is unwaveringly excellent. I can't wait to come have another meal here in 2011!

Try:  Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes - Bacon Cheeseburger - Bone-In Filet Mignon
     Skip:  Boca Chopped Salad

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Clams Casino - Fruit Salad (no oil) - Iced Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail - French Onion Soup Au Gratin - Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Benedict –  Steak Benedict - Lobster and Shrimp Omelette – Abe & Louie’s Salad – Filet Mignon – Boca Chopped Salad – Blueberry Pancakes – Fresh Lobster Salad - Bacon Cheeseburger - Beef Steak Tomatoes - Sirloin au Poivre - Creamed Fresh Spinach - Fresh Asparagus - Sauteed Mushrooms - Chocolate Dipped Strawberries - Flirtini

Caliterra Restaurant & Bar Review

Caliterra Bar & Grille at the Hilton
My Opinions: It's official, I truly feel like I'm the "Norm" of Caliterra - guess I will just have to embrace it!

With the cold weather here, this hotel restaurant and bar is getting busier. They've had some change in management, and I hope it doesn't cause a big staff-turnover or cause stocking issues. I did notice they were out of a few items, so let's see if this works itself out.

The food here is still good, but my 2011 wish is for a menu revamp that changes at least 60% of the appetizers, entrees and deserts!

Try:  Spinach Tortellini - Heirloom Tomato Salad
     Skip:  Filet Mignon Sandwich

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Sliders - Cheese Fries - Spinach Tortellini Pasta - Chicken lettuce Wraps – Mediterranean Pizza - Wild Mushroom Pizza – Pepperoni Pizza – Heirloom Tomato Salad – Filet Mignon Sandwich – Penne with Shrimp - Chicken Panini – Turkey Panini - Cookies & Ice Cream - Tiramisu - Strawberry Shortcake

Statler Lounge Bar Review

Statler Lounge at the Park Plaza
My Opinions:   I needed to preoccupy myself for a couple hours this evening while waiting for round-2 of my spa appointment (looong story), so I decided to go accross the street to the Park Plaza Hotel.

This was my first time to try this hotel bar. It was nice and cozy, but is decidedly not a destination spot. I did like that they had a pianist, and that the wine list was decent, but what I didn't care for was their teeny-tiny bar menu. I was hungry and it did not offer up much, so I opted to go on an impromtu diet.

This hotel is rich in history, but is certainly not known for its food.  The afternoon tea is mediocre and we all remember how I felt about Pairings after my unimpressive dinner. It's a great atmosphere, and convenient hotel, but not a foodie haven in the least.

Bristol Lounge Restaurant Review

Bristol Lounge at the Four Seasons
My Opinions: It's nice to see that Michael has not ventured far from his previous job at Asana and has now come work at the Bristol Lounge. Congrats on the move!

I have been coming here since I was little, but I don't remember ever enjoying the Teddy Bear Tea. This special tea is only done duing the winter holiday season and is wonderful. The Four Seasons collects donated teddy bears and then works with non-profits to deliver the bears to children in need. The tea is great too, especially for kids, because a "real" teddy bear comes out and walks around to their delight ... and mine! It should not be missed.

I should note that the food is just as delicious as always and the service is appropriately formal to match. I love to sit by the Boylston St. windows for people watching or lounge on one of their comfy couches. The  the bar scene on the weekend is still decent for professional, mature, singles to mix and mingle.

     Try:  Bristol Burger
     Skip:  Creamed Spinach

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters on the Half Shell - Jumbo Shrimp - Endive, Pear and Watercress Salad - Viennese dessert buffet – Pate – Bibb Salad - Sea Scallops - The Famous Bristol Burger – Oven Roasted Crispy Chicken – New England Striped Bass - Truffle Fries - Trio of Fries - Creamed Spinach with Parmesan Crust - Prime Filet Mignon

M Bar Review

M Bar at the Mandarin Oriental
My Opinions: This is a great place to come to after a day of shopping at Copley since you don't have to go outside to get inside this place.  It's also a popular after-work spot ... especially now that the colder weather is upon us. It can get crowded during the weekends, packed with a unique medley of people dressed up and ready to flirt.

The food here is good, but it's not the most comfortable place to eat when it's busy, so I recommend going into the lounge or the restaurant, Asana. I do like that M Bar offers more exotic brands of beers and liquors that you don’t commonly find around here. The bartenders are knowledgeable, friendly and very professional.

Happy Holidays!

Taj Tea Review

Taj Tea at the Taj Hotel Boston
My Opinions: This is one of my favorite teas in Boston. It's held in the richly-adorned French room upstairs, and I always sit in the room with all the windows for the natural light and great view of Newbury Street.

The presentation is classic, the food is tasty, the drinks are refreshing, and the atmosphere is cozy. If I had to say a "con", I would say that the service could use some work to encourage more professional courtesies and quicker turn-around. I love the addition of live music - it's such a nice back drop to great conversations and relaxation.

P.S. Don't miss the fragrant holiday gingerbread-Taj in the lobby (It's huge and well done!).

Taj Bar Review

Taj Bar at the Taj Hotel Boston
My Opinions: This has never been a spot I ever try to come to (as you can see by my 'amount visited').

Aside from it not being a fun spot, it is a bit oppressive even with all the windows facing the common, it doesn't have good service, and the staff has mentioned the food isn't done well (yikes!). Their mixed drinks are decent, and their wine list is average. If I had to say a "pro", the Taj Bar is a good spot for a business meeting because it's in an upscale place, is typically very quiet, and you are rarely interrupted/serviced by the staff.

With all the other places around, you can do better!

Foundation Room Review

Foundation Room at the House of Blues
My Opinions: They have great bartenders in this semi-private club. The atmosphere is swanky with comfy seating, lots of colorful fabrics and interesting nooks & crannies to explore. I love that they have a fireplace too!

They have a medium-sized food menu and a dining room. I've been to a few private events here, and they seem to do a good job with making sure everyone is taken care of. I have yet to eat here or work with the staff to host my own party, but I heard they're fairly easy-going. 2011 - it's a bet.

Mooo Restaurant Review

Mooo
My Opinions:  I've become an even bigger fan of this place over the years. The food has remained delicious and of excellent quality. The service here is great and the interior is pretty - a softer decor  from other steakhouses. The wine list has improved too!

I have never eaten lunch here or spent time at the bar, but it looks nice even if it's not very busy ... they also have different menus for both, so something new for me to try in 2011!

I saw their private dining room downstairs by the bathrooms and it was "okay". What truly turned me off was their standard event packet. It had a lot of rules and fees and was written with little thought for pleasing/attracting clients. I was surprised since they do such a nice job upstairs in the restaurant.

Bar 10 Review

Bar 10 at the Westin Copley Place Boston

My Opinions: I like coming here when I'm looking for a semi-causal time. The food is decent, the servers are nice but a little slow, and the bartenders are friendly. The scene fluctuates since a lot of patrons are there because of another event, but it's never without a few locals!

The food prices are a bit steep for what you're getting, but the drinks are fair because they're potent and made well. The mini-sized deserts are a nice touch, but I would really like them to get large bottles of sparkling waters instead of their kid-sized bottles!

     Try:  Panini
     Skip: Tuna Carpaccio

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Seafood Tower – Artichoke Dip – Turkey Club Panini - Steak Burger - Toscana

Sorellina Restaurant & Bar Review

Sorellina
My Opinions:  I came here for a quick bite at the bar and ended up staying  until close - the staff here is amazing and so much fun!

I was able to enjoy their fresh Duxbury oysters on the very cold half shell (again). They are delicious! I have been trying to get the side of eggplant gratinata back on the menu, but to no avail thus far.

This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Boston for years. The service and food is top-notch, and the atmosphere is airy, attractive, and clean. It's definitely going to be a 2011 staple.

Try:  Filet Mignon - Oysters on the half shell - Roasted Beets
     Skip:  Duck - Zeppole

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters - Roasted Late Summer Beets - Foie Gras – Arugula – Carpaccio - Insalata - Verdure – Maccheroncelli – Filet Mignon – Ribeye – Chicken – Duck - Eggplant Gratinata – Ciambelle – Cioccolato – Semifreddo - Tiramisu - Zeppole

Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar Review

Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar
My Opinions: Another nice restaurant addition to this area.  They did a great job with the layout. There is a nice amount of bar space, with standing room on one side and seats on the other, and dining room tables on the perimeter. The lighting is low and the vibe is friendly with a chic-casual crowd.

I believe this is the first place I've found with a shot section on the drink menu. In the spirit of things, I had my first "pickleback" shot ... curiosity quelled. Next on my to-drink list is their punch bowl mixtures.

This place has a nice variety of food, whiskey labels, and you can even book a pig roast. I guess roasts are not just for the summer time any more!

      Jer-Ne Restaurant & Bar Review

Jer-Ne Restaurant & Bar at the Ritz Carlton Boston
My Opinions:  I came here for dinner before seeing a movie next door. It's such a convenient spot located just off of the Common.  They have good food and a decent wine list. The atmosphere is dimly lit and comfortable. The service is friendly, but not very formal. Also, the kitchen is a bit slow getting the food out, so plan ahead.

The bar scene is typically a more mature crowd primarily consisting of locals mixed with some travelers staying at the Ritz Carlton. I really wish they'd revamp the menu more often.

      Gari Restaurant Review

      Gari Japanese Fusion
My Opinions:  What a nice lazy Sunday I had. We watched the Food Network (The Best Thing I Ever Ate marathon) and ordered lunch in.  I was pleasantly surprised that the food quality Gari put out on their delivery was just as good as what you get in their restaurant. It arrived soon after I ordered - the sushi was fresh and the hot foods were hot.

The luncheon specials are a great deal. I will definitely order from them again!

      Oak Bar Review

Oak Bar @ Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel
My Opinions:  It was really busy in the bar tonight with a nice variety of people from ages 35 and up.

The service is formal, but slow unless you manage to finagle a seat at the tiny bar. There are plenty of table throughout the lounge - I like to sit by the windows. They sometimes have live music, but call to find out the schedule because there wasn't any this evening.

The food is good at both the bar and in the restaurant but lately the restaurant hasn't been up to snuff, so I choose to dine elsewhere, but this is a great pre or post dinner spot. I do like the dining room layout and formal decor, so I hope the kitchen will pull it together in 2011.

           Try:  Chateaubriand - Artichoke Dip
           Skip: Lamb Lollipops

Island Creek Oyster Bar Restaurant Review

      Island Creek Oyster Bar
My Opinions:  What a great interior! I can't believe this is the same space Great Bay was in (RIP Great Bay). Be sure to get a close-up of the far back wall made up of all oyster shells.

The newly elongated bar was packed with a great crowd, the lounge tables were full and the dining room was running smoothly. I experienced great service at the bar and then in the dining room. The raw bar is the best around and the food is good. To be fair, the two deserts I tried were not very good, a bit dry and flavorless, so save the calories or go somewhere else. And rounding out the offerings, they have a great wine list and cocktail menu.

As long as oysters remain plentiful and fresh, I hope to see this place stay around for a long time. Go SHUCKING!

      Clink Bar Review

      Clink @ Liberty Hotel
My Opinions: This is a great spot for cocktails - especially if you're "single and ready to mingle"!

The crowd is handsome, well dressed, and diverse. The opened circular floor plan is liberating. Tonight was no exception, the music was hot, the crowd was thick and the drinks were strong ... it's not nearly as claustrophobic as Alibi (I went in and out in about 5 minutes tonight). You can not go wrong coming here on the weekend, and it's even a safe bet during the week.  I'd still skip the restaurant though.  Eat downstairs at Scampo or somewhere close by if you're hungry.

They do a good job hosting special events like art showings and fashion shows during the week to keep it interesting. Don't miss the Vuvee Cliquot menu, and I dare you to purchase the Key Cocktail ... it's bound to be memorable, so share your experience on my blog!
