    Radius Restaurant & Bar Review

    Radius
My Opinions: I came by just for an after-work drink and the bar was packed with a nice mix of professionals ... the warm weather will only enhance the experience. I'm definitely going back - A Boston-Classic in the Financial District, and one of my favorite restaurants to dine at - Service is impeccable with Food Quality and Flavors to match - I like the sexy room layout and simple/clean decor - I'm a big fan of Via Matta as well, a member of Michael Schlow's group of restaurants.

    Morton's Restaurant & Bar Review

    Morton's
My Opinions: I really enjoyed my time at the bar tonight ... and there were definitely more guys than girls here (ladies get in there!) - The bartenders were very nice and attentive - They have a nice wine list with the appropriate stemware (more restaurants with a notable wine list should follow this lead as it enhances the wine's flavors)

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Lobster Cocktail - Sliced Beefsteak Tomato - New York Strip Steak - Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes - Chicago Style Bone-In Ribeye Steak - Jumbo Asparagus - Macaroni & Cheese

    Caliterra Restaurant & Bar Review

Caliterra Bar & Grille at the Hilton
My Opinions: I had another great evening here and was thrilled to discover that they've started offering some bar bites (great cheese fries), and I finally tried the Cookies & Ice Cream desert (loved it) - It's a great place to come to as a single diner/drinker - The staff is great, especially Dragon & Elena the bartenders! - I haven't gotten a chance to enjoy the buffet breakfast that they serve every morning (yet)

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Sliders - Cheese Fries - Spinach Tortellini Pasta - Chicken lettuce Wraps – Wild Mushroom Pizza – Pepperoni Pizza – Heirloom Tomato Salad – Filet Mignon Sandwich – Chicken Panini – Turkey Panini - Cookies & Ice Cream

Granite Links - (Updated) Golfing Days 2009

I thought my golfing list seemed a bit light in my Golfing Days 2009 blog post - I left out Granite Links in early August!  This was one of the toughest courses I've played, but also one of the nicest in the Boston-Area. The courses were well-maintained and offered fantastic views.
The first 9 of Granite Links Golf Club opened for play in 2003, and the second 9 opened in summer 2004, and I don't quite know when the final 9 opened, but they were available when I was playing. The rough is really dense. I believe I lost over 5 balls on this course (quite a lot for me!) ... if you find some Black Dogs those are mine!

So, I actually played golf 19 times at 17 different courses in 2009.  My 2010 goal is still to play at least 25 rounds at over 20 different clubs!

Here's my revised list with some extra fun facts.  You can assume that golf carts are available at all of the places I've played, because we all know that I am not walking the course!

    Troquet Restaurant & Bar Review

    Troquet
My Opinions: I got a chance to sit at the front downstairs bar for a while, and it offered some great people-watching ... the really friendly bartender helped make the stay enjoyable as well - When I went upstairs for dinner, I was thrilled to get the table I sat in last year, (the window seat shown in this blog's photo) - The food was as I remembered, delicious but a bit too salt-heavy - The server and atmosphere was great!

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Black Sea Bass - Marinated Beet Salad – Ricotta Cavatelli – Crispy Duck Confit – Short Rib Canneloni – Roasted Sucking Pig – Veal – Hazelnut Mille - Sticky Toffee - Pistachio Souffle

    Border Cafe Restaurant Review

    Border Cafe
My Opinions: A Cambridge / Harvard Square staple restaurant that families, college kids and couples alike enjoy. I don't think I have ever seen this place empty in the years and years I've been dining here - The food flavors the air and tastes consistently good - The service is surprisingly good, go team go!, even when it's slammed - They have a large vegetarian section on their menu - And, if anything, you can experience some of the biggest soda/water glasses I've ever drank from.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Every Margarita offered! - Steak and Bleu Cheese Salad - Tostada Grande - Cajun Burger - Chili con Queso - Catfish New Orleans - Blackened Chicken - Cadillac Fajitas - Chicken/Beef Fajitas - Burros - Enchiladas - Quesadillas - Jambalaya

    Rocca Restaurant & Bar Review

    Rocca
My Opinions: I finally tried the upstairs bar and it was better than I thought! I also got a chance to try their happy hour bar menu that I didn't know they offered ... it feels good to save money on delicious food. They got a new chef, but the food quality has not  been affected, so great work! - Don't miss the outside dining during the warm season.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Rocca Burger - Patatine Fritte - Pizetta al Melanzane - Arugula & Pear Salad – Arugula & Pomegranate Salad – Rigatoni Baked in a Pot – Pappardelle – Sirloin – Braised Short Ribs – Roasted Chicken – Smashed Almond Bark – Roasted Artichokes – Pacciugo di Portofino

    M Bar Review

M Bar at the Mandarin Oriental
My Opinions: I had the great opportunity to meet with Ari, one of the newest members of the restaurant and bar management. He was very nice and polished, coming from the Four Seasons and being hired by the Mandarin, I wouldn't expect anything less.  I'm looking forward to working with him! - M Bar offers quality brand beers and liquors that you don’t commonly find – In their staff change over they too off the Billionaire’s Margarita …hmmm, I'll work on getting them to make one for me anyways!

    Sonsie Restaurant & Bar Review

    Sonsie
My Opinions:  I like that you can come here and order some bar food late-night. (The burger pizza is always an easy choice) I was surprised that it was a bit quite for a Wednesday, but I have no doubt that it will be packed now that the warm weather is upon us - Sonsie's a Boston-Staple on the social scene that pulls a handsome crowd!

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters – Calamari – Mesclun Salad – Chop – Capellini – Gnocchi – Burger Pizza – Mushroom Pizza – Squash Pizza – Wagyu Burger Pizza – Chicken – Shirred Eggs – Shrimp Salad – Mee Krob – Red Velvet Cake

    Golfing Days 2009

Last year, I played golf 18 times at 16 different golf courses.  In 2010, I'm hoping to play at least 25 rounds at over 20 different clubs - wish me luck!

I recently played my first game of golf in 2010, and it's rekindled some fantastic 2009 golfing memories!

Sel de la Terre Restaurant Review

    Sel de la Terre
My Opinions:  I am not a fan of Restaurant Week(s) for a few reasons  ... like not being able to get a table at a restaurant I frequent  because of the crowds that come out during this trend, and that  restaurants offer special menus that have dishes never offered on their regular menu ... what happens when the newcomer comes back for that dish and can't get it? Restaurants risk loosing the very people they just worked so hard to entice - Anyhow, I was just to dinner here and found myself ordering off their Restaurant Week menu! They did it right by offering their popular menu items with only slight changes, if any, to keep their price-point down.  Here, a Sel de la Terre-newbie can go back to the restaurant and feel like they are familiar with the space and menu -  The service is usually very good, but not this visit ... it was actually very disjointed and borderline-impolite.  I do not know what happened here tonight, but I am optimistic that this was just a fluke and service will be up to par on my next visit.

Some Food/Drink Tasted:  Oysters - Mixed greens - Eggplant - Goat Cheese puree – Pork Pate – Beef Short Rib – Grilled Hanger Steak Frites – Grilled ham and Cheese – Brunch Breads – Brioche French Toast – Quiche - Chocolate Molten Fondant Cake

    Abe & Louie's
My Opinions: No surprise, I just had brunch (the best meal here) and noticed that they have setup the outside seating! Outside dining is a great way to enjoy the food here in the warm weather because it offers great people-watching – Exceptional Staff – Food quality is fresh and flavorful. My favorite part of their amazing brunch bread basket is the mini blueberry muffins -  The Back Bay Restaurant Group has an amazing circle of restaurants, and Abe & Louie's is my favorite out of all of them - Learn about their low-profile Preferred Guest Program, sign up and save money!

    Hotel Chocolat Boston

    Hotel Chocolat

For everyone who thinks chocolate is exciting ...

Hotel Chocolat offers quite a rush.  I've come in here a few times for gifts to other people, but I always seem to leave with something for myself too! The staff is so friendly and accommodating. They have a huge sample stash at the front desk that I always indulge in. And they are very clean, something I appreciate on a deeper level than most.

I'm looking forward to hosting a tasting party in the back room, and I will likely ask for a wine pairing to be added on.

Via Matta Restaurant & Bar Review

    Via Matta
My Opinions: I can honestly say I have never had a bad experience here. Via Matta is consistently good all-round: food, service, ambiance and cleanliness - The food is fresh and very tasty with some unique flavors, but nothing too over-the-top that can make for an uncomfortable ordering and tentative first bite - Bar is very nice, but isn't consistently busy. Also, it is not a great spot for singles to meet and mingle - Outside seating is nice in the warm season - They offer a smaller function room at the front-left of the restaurant that has large windows and its own bar which is a nice touch for private parties/events - I'm a big fan of Radius as well, a member of Michael Schlow's restaurant family.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Burrata – Insalata Mista – Crunch Eggplant – Panini – Prosciutto Cotto – Duck Tortelli – Pappardelle – Veal with Lentils – Beef Sirloin – Brussels Sprouts – Apple Crostata – Cannoli

    Fleming's Restaurant & Bar Review

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar
My Opinions: I finally got a chance to eat at the bar, and it was very good. The bartenders were attentive and friendly, so it's a great option for solo diners/drinkers –  They have one of my favorite Cabernets by the glass, Chateau Montelena, so I would definitely say that they offer a great selection of wines - The bar scene is great for after-work drinks as well.

    Avila Restaurant & Bar Review

    Avila
My Opinions: I started coming here for dinner, but as of late, it's become a great bar scene in the South End ... and it's staying power is even more proof that it still has charm.  With two bars (one in the front main room and one in the back), it pulls in locals with energy and an affinity for a good time!

    NoRTH Restaurant Review

    NoRTH
My Opinions:  This is part of FOX Restaurant Concepts, and true to their reputation, this didn't feel like a chain restaurant. The atmosphere was chic and spacious - The service was not very good, but the food was quite delicious - Wine list by the bottle was decent and their wines by the glass could have been better - Their mozzarella was gooey-fresh - For the area, the pricing was expensive - The outside tables were a nice option, and I would come back to experience them once it gets warmer.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Caprese Salad - Short Rib “Osso Buco” - Sea Bass - Chicken Parmesan - Nutella Desert

    Wellshire Golf Course

    Wellshire Golf Course
My Opinions:  This was my first opportunity to play golf in 2010, so I was elated before I even got out on this course (for the first time).  The staff was very accommodating, friendly and charismatic, so I was off to a good start; and I had my mom along for the ride, so the company was great! The course is opened year round, and it still had its winter coat on ... grass was splotchy, tee markers were not out, trees were bare.  It's a narrow course, and with the sparse greenery, so I actually ended up playing on the wrong hole on the 4th (and I thought I was doing really well) ... ooops! I could see its potential though once the warm season emerged - They didn't have the beer cart that day, but you can stock up at their cute bar/restaurant at the club house - It was a Donal Ross design, and not the best I've played, but the staff was great, so I wouldn't mind coming back.

Fun Facts: 18-Holes - Public Course - 4 Sets of Tee Boxes - Drink Cart Available Most Days

      Tuscany Tavern Restaurant Review

      Tuscany Tavern
My Opinions:  This is a great restaurant in the unassuming town of Evergreen - The owners are a fixture, and their friendliness and energy sets a great tone for everyone else - The bar experience is just as nice as the dining room - I was able to enjoy St. Patrick's Day here this year, and, even though this is an Italian Restaurant, Tuscany Tavern did it right by offering some staple Irish dishes and green beer! - The service and food is consistently good - In the warm weather, there is a beautiful outside dining option - They recently opened up a larger function space next to the main restaurant to accommodate private parties and events ... I hope I have the opportunity to plan an event here.

      Vesta Dipping Grill Restaurant Review

      Vesta Dipping Grill
My Opinions:  I like the premise of this restaurant, offering a set menu of food that can change flavors with a large variety of sauces, but I didn't think the base meats were all that great. If a restaurant has a limited menu of entree choices, then I would hope that they'd be above average in quality, cuts and preparation .... unfortunately I did not experience that - Atmosphere is nice - Service is average - Looks like it would be a great bar and appetizer spot, but I don't plan on coming back for dinner.

Stephanie's on Newbury Restaurant & Bar Review

      Stephanie's on Newbury

My Opinions: This is a classic Newbury Street Restaurant, and I've been coming here for years - Today, I braved the pouring rain and dangerous winds to have my Sunday wake-me-up-with-food here because I was craving Stephanie's Fruit Bowl ... it is so worth it! The large cuts of fresh chilled fruit and a sprinkling of granola is a great way to start off your meal. The pancakes were delicious too! (This is a nice break from Abe & Louie's brunch) - Stephi’s on Tremont, Stephanie's younger member of the family, has a similar brunch that's just as delicious.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Fruit Bowl - Chocolate Chip and Blueberry Pancakes - Frittered French Toast – Skirt Steak – Winter House Salad – Fried Calamari – Baked Spinach and Artichoke Dip – Open Faced Thanksgiving Sandwich – Fried Chicken Sandwich – Turkey Club – Classic Chunky Chicken Salad – Red Beet Salad – Pecan Crusted Warm Goat Cheese Salad – Pulled Chicken Pasta – Chicken Pot Pie – Oversized Stephi Burger – Macaroni and Cheese – Bread Pudding – Warm Chocolate Cake

Union Bar and Grille Restaurant Review

      Union Bar and Grille
My Opinions: I have been coming here since it opened, and I have been coming back ever since ... many of the neighboring restaurants have come and gone, but this place has never closed due, largely in part, to the quality food and fine people that come here (the cornbread doesn't hurt either) - Bar is fun complete with high tables and seats at the bar - Restaurant section is clean and sophisticated - Decent Wine Bottle Pricing

      Marliave Restaurant Review

      Marliave
My Opinions: I had another excellent dinner here!  I was excited to hear they added a cheese menu, so I started dinner with an appetizer of cheeses, a choice meat selection, and a peppery imported dipping oil. The pecorino was my favorite! - I did notice that they have taken off the  expensive truffle cheesy macaroni that I had tried before - The staff is very knowledgeable and kind. They encourage you to sit and enjoy the atmosphere and food ... you almost forget you're in Boston -  Bar on the street-level floor was very good, and surprisingly busy. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come to this bar, but it's nice to sit at before or after dining here - I cannot wait to come back!

Some Food/Drink Tasted:  Lasagna - Cheesy Macaroni – Beets - Henry’s Soup – Yankee Pot Roast – Bistecca - Risotto - Mixed Greens - Cake and Ice Cream

        Oishii Restaurant Review

        Oishii Boston
My Opinions: Food has always been delicious, fresh and of high quality - the Service is attentive, but not overbearing - the Ambiance is the best ... dark, swanky and minimalistic with a moderate to quite noise volume. It's a special restaurant good for dates, special occasions, and/or important business dinners.

        Blu Restaurant Review

        Blu
My Opinions: I recently had lunch here and it was so nice! Not only do you get to "bump into" a lot of familiar faces, it's nice to enjoy the daylight coming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The salad portions were generous too - It wasn't very crowded, but that didn't impact my experience. Service is good, friendly staff, and they were attentive, but not overbearing – Food quality was very good – Ambiance is decent and fluctuates – Bar scene is good for singles, locals and pairs – If you’re a member of Sports Club LA you are privy to a discount off of your bill

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Turkey BLT - Smoked Mozzarella Sticks – Poached Pear Salad – Seasonal Special Salads – Mixed Greens Salad - Roasted Chicken Breast – New York Strip Steak – Raspberry Dark Chocolate – “Angus” Burger

        Umbria Restaurant Review

        Umbria Prime
My Opinions:  I was excited about the reopening of their top floor dance club, and I had heard good things about their food, but I was disappointed once I had dinner  - If you have been following my blog, I am well versed with Braised Beef, and the short ribs I had here were mediocre ... the flavor was lackluster and the texture was a bit  rough/dry - The buffalo mozzarella was good, but not gooey-fresh, and the Jumbo Asparagus came drenched in oil and salt - Service was not friendly, nor was it attentive ... actually the best service I got was from the runner (not sure of his title), not from my waiter - Wine list was decent - I would come back to eat here, but I wouldn't be the one to suggest it ... especially with Radius, Caliterra, Meritage, Sel de la Terre, etc. so close!

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Imported Buffalo Mozzarella - Pappardelle - Braised Beef Short Ribs - Jumbo Asparagus - Roasted Wild Mushrooms - Tiramisu

        Sonsie Restaurant & Bar Review

        Sonsie
My Opinions:  A Boston-Staple on the social scene ... I've been coming here since before I could hang at the bar. It's a place that's reliable, entertains a good looking crowd, and serves food a little later than most places in the area - Service is good, especially in the dining room - Food is fine,  they do a good job trying to change up the menu every so often, but it's really all about the atmosphere - The warm season makes it even better because they open up their large front windows that look out onto Newbury Street (Boston's Rodeo Drive) - They have a wine room downstairs, but the upstairs bar is really where to be!

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters – Calamari – Mesclun Salad – Chop – Capellini – Gnocchi – Burger Pizza – Mushroom Pizza – Squash Pizza – Wagyu Burger Pizza – Chicken – Shirred Eggs – Shrimp Salad – Mee Krob – Red Velvet Cake

        Savinos Grill Restaurant Review

        Savinos Grill
My Opinions:  Good Italian and Mediterranean Cuisine that offers a small, but pleasing menu - Great restaurant layout with a semi-opened kitchen. You can find the owner working, hands-on, in the kitchen  until close (I love that!) - Very small bar you can sit at, but even singles can typically get a table if so desired - the Sundown Special offers a delicious tapas menu - They currently have Live Jazz on Thursdays

        Craigie On Main Restaurant Review

        Craigie on Main
My Opinions: I have been to "this" restaurant when it was Craigie St. Bistro, and the new location has only improved the dining experience - I was in a large party for my latest dinner here, and we were able to all enjoy the pig's head (half a head). It looks true to form and comes complete with teeth and a puffed-up ear ... not for the vegan-friendly - The service was very attentive and efficient - Libations were excellent - The management was not easy to work with, nor were they accommodating, on setting up a reservation for a larger party, but the actual experience was stress free.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Pig's Head - Tortellini of Braised Pork Belly - Hirmasa Sashimi - Roasted Vermont Organic Squab - Peanut Butter Parfait - Double Chocolate Tart

        Noir Restaurant & Bar Review

        Noir at the Charles Hotel
My Opinions:  Food is delicious and I really like their specialty cocktails menu - The bar is nice to sit at ,and on the weekends it can get pretty lively - The 5-4-3-2-1-0 Happy Hour is Fantastic - During the summer they offer outside seating (always an added bonus)!

        Les Zygomates Restaurant Review

        Les Zygomates
My Opinions: This is a great up-scale restaurant and wine bar that offers a great mix of food, wine and live music (on most nights) - I have been coming here for years and have enjoyed many of the Wine Tastings on Tuesdays - The Raw Bar is always fresh and visually appealing - the location is a bit outside my typical circle of restaurants, so it's a nice change of scenery.

        POPS Restaurant and Bar Review

        POPS
My Opinions: I haven't been back to POPS since they renovated their space to become more bar-like. I have heard that the bar service needs some tweaking (service quicker, mix better, develop manners) ... most are common problem for places in their first month of opening ... though this is a re-opening - The food has always been delicious - Service is typically friendly and unassuming - I will be visiting the "new" POPS soon to see how they've adjusted to their new layout and menu. I have faith they'll rise to the occasion.

        Sorellina Restaurant & Bar Review

        Sorellina
My Opinions:  This is one of my favorite restaurants in Boston.  The large black/white photo by the wine wall reminds me of Opus One in Napa, CA - The service is wonderful in the restaurant - They have an excellent wine list on their bottle menu - Food is delicious ... I like to start with the Eggplant Gratinata to dip my bread into - It's always kept clean and well organized- the Bar can be fun, but it does vary.

        Some Food/Drink Tasted: Foie Gras – Arugula – Verdure – Maccheroncelli – Filet Mignon – Ribeye – Chicken – Eggplant Gratinata – Ciambelle – Cioccolato – Semifreddo

        Minibar Restaurant and Bar Review

        Minibar
My Opinions: I love the atmosphere and decor, but the people scene hasn't really caught up to the setting. The white furniture and view of Copely is very attractive - Service if fine - Food is just okay, but  it can take a while to receive it, and your options are limited
