Grill 23 Bar & Restaurant Review

Grill 23 & Bar
My Opinions: I was happy to see that the bar scene was busier than normal this evening. Also, this place's reputation has remained in good standing as I saw more than a few top industry faces in the dining room.

For me, I used to frequent this spot for the delicious food, but, over the last 2 years, I've been underwhelmed. I have noticed a drop in the food quality and service. It's still good, but the decline from where it was is noticeable. I am rooting for this place to rise to its original star quality, so it's still a place I want to revisit.

Over all, the service is attentive and formal, the cuts of meat are proper, the seafood is fresh, and the portions are good. The wine list is extensive but notably over priced, and they are out of more than a few bottles that are still on the list. Grill 23 should revamp their menu and wine list. I hope they reconcile their items, prices and inventory in this new year.

Try:  Delmonico - New York Strip

Sorellina Restaurant & Bar Review

Sorellina
My Opinions:  I had another great dinner here, and I mustn't have been the only one who has been impressed because the dining room was packed. No surprise, I had 2 orders of the Duxbury oysters on the very-cold half shell with briny cucumber mini-balls and lime ice - so fresh, so good! I did save room for the semifreddo, and it is still the best one I've eaten in Boston. (Note-to-self: requests the corner table I want when making my reservations.)

This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Boston for years. The service and food is top-notch, they offer a full wine list, and the atmosphere is airy, attractive, and clean.

Try:  Oysters on the half shell - Roasted Beets - Semifreddo
     Skip:  Duck - Zeppole

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters - Roasted Late Summer Beets - Foie Gras – Arugula – Carpaccio - Insalata - Verdure – Lobster - Maccheroncelli – Filet Mignon – Ribeye – Chicken – Duck - Eggplant Gratinata – Ciambelle – Cioccolato – Semifreddo - Tiramisu - Zeppole

Caliterra Restaurant & Bar Review

Caliterra Bar & Grille at the Hilton
My Opinions: Red Alert: Caliterra is changing over to a bistro and it is not looking good for our relationship. I think I'm going to have to find a new local spot :(

They have already gotten rid of offering San Pellegrino water bottles, my favorite cabernet by Louis Martini, and my huge swirling-friendly wine glasses. I wanted them to revamp the menu, but this is ridiculous - change is not always good.

They have not announced what the bistro name is going to be, or what the new menu has to offer, but I have a feeling Umbria and Vintage Lounge reviews are going to be popping up on this blog soon.

Try:  Spinach Tortellini - Heirloom Tomato Salad
     Skip:  Filet Mignon Sandwich

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Sliders - Cheese Fries - Spinach Tortellini Pasta - Chicken lettuce Wraps – Mediterranean Pizza - Wild Mushroom Pizza – Pepperoni Pizza – Heirloom Tomato Salad – Filet Mignon Sandwich – Penne with Shrimp - Chicken Panini – Turkey Panini - Cookies & Ice Cream - Tiramisu - Strawberry Shortcake

Uni Sashimi Bar Review

Uni Sashimi Bar @ Eliot Hotel
My Opinions:  I came here after the Wine Expo and was planning on eating at Clio while also ordering some sushi from Uni. What I learned was that these two restaurants do not accommodate each other even though they share a bar, a host stand, an entrance, and a view.

... I did think about ordering delivery from Uni while dining in Clio, but we decided to flip a coin and it landed closer to Uni, so that's where we sat.

The space was cramped and the service was alright, but none of that mattered because the wine list was kind and the food was excellent. Chef Oringer is one of my favorites because he demands quality. He also lets the foods' true tastes come through instead of drowning them in sauces or spices. The wagyu cooked on a hot stone, to your desired temperature, was such a treat, especially for me because I like my beef a bit more well-done than most people do. For full disclosure, the dessert choices were something I would skip altogether ... not really a bad thing.

     Try:  Lobster Tempura - Wagyu
     Skip:  Yuzu

Some Food/Drink Tasted:  Miso Soup - Oysters on the Half Shell - Tataki - Lobster Tempura - Wagyu - Yuzu

West End Johnnie's (on the side) Review

West End Johnnie's (on the side (of the West End))
My Opinions:  Aside from changing it's name like Sean "P" "Diddy" "Puffy" Combs, and me being biased since my friend was singing there, this place is a-okay in my book.

I used to come to lunch here when it was Anthem. The interior layout has stayed the same, and it's a little bit too well lit for the vibe, but the staff is kind and the service is good. The menu is now a relaxed medley of comfort foods that are well prepared and flavorful.

It's also a welcomed spot for music such as their Saturday Country Night or Sunday Reggae Brunch. I hope to come back here to try some more of their menu and listen to some live music.

Fleming's Restaurant & Bar Review

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar
My Opinions:  I finally made it for an after-work cocktail and their "Prime Burger Bar" special. The bartenders were friendly, accommodating, and great mixologists.  The Prime Burger was delicious ... especially with the extra bacon they kindly added at my request!

The wine list is great (they even offer one of my favorites, Chateau Montelena Cabernet, by the glass), the service is always good, and the food is consistently fresh and well-prepared.  Even though it's part of a large restaurant chain, it avoids feeling like an over-replicated clone that cuts corners with cheapened decor and mediocre quality food.

     Try:  Bone-In Ribeye
     Skip:   Fleming's Potatoes

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Fleming's Prime Burger - Wedge Salad – Mozzarella & Sweet Tomato – Asparagus – Filet Mignon – Bone-in Ribeye – Shrimp - Fleming's Potatoes - French Green Beans - Walnut Turtle Pie - Macaroni and Cheese - Mushrooms - Lava Cake

Abe & Louie's Restaurant & Bar Review

Abe & Louie's
My Opinions: I recently had dinner here, and was not impressed with their raw oysters (they weren't served cold & some were a bit slimy ... so putting that on the "SKIP" list). On the up side, the steak was great!

Moving on to better news:
Today, I had another fantastic brunch that started with a basket of their gratis breakfast breads and an extra side of my favorite mini-blueberry muffins, then on to their special, a trio of  benedicts with truffled hollandaise sauce, and everything was delicious.

I can always expect to have a relaxing brunch here with attentive service and a great ambiance. It was nice to see the restaurant bustling with the ever-fashionable Back Bay crowd; I could come here every weekend. See you soon, Abe & Louie's!

Try:  Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes - Bacon Cheeseburger - Bone-In Filet Mignon
Skip:  Boca Chopped Salad - Oysters on the Half Shell

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Clams Casino - Fruit Salad (no oil) - Iced Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail - French Onion Soup Au Gratin - Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Benedict –  Steak Benedict - Lobster and Shrimp Omelette – Abe & Louie’s Salad – Filet Mignon – Boca Chopped Salad – Blueberry Pancakes – Fresh Lobster Salad - Bacon Cheeseburger - Beef Steak Tomatoes - Sirloin au Poivre - Creamed Fresh Spinach - Fresh Asparagus - Sauteed Mushrooms - Chocolate Dipped Strawberries - Flirtini

Bistro du Midi Restaurant & Bar Review

Bistro du Midi
My Opinions: This was my first dinner here in 2011, and it was a great start to the year ... and much needed.  After just surviving the blizzard, I came down with a cold and got my car towed, so before I went to hand over a bulk of money, brave the 0-degree weather, and dig my car out of ice and snow, I decided that I (and my faithful friend) needed some sustenance, so I got a table at Bistro du Midi.

Thankfully, they had my favorite squash barbajans back on the menu and handed me the always-obliging wine list to raise my spirits. The food was great, the service was just as fantastic, and I had a wonderful time.  I do wish they would create better specials; nevertheless, I am looking forward to coming here again soon.

P.S. what happened to the free nougat at the end of the meal? What - the rice paper wasn't a hit? (called it!)

     Try:  Barbajans - Beef Daube
Skip:  Cheese Plate (go to Troquet instead) - Soufflés

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Barbajans, Parmesan & Black Olive Shortbreads – Fried Artichokes with Aïoli – Chestnut Soup – Calamari - Marinated Beet Salad – Poached Maine Lobster - Filet of Beef – Classic Provençal Beef Daube - Trio of Sorbets - Grand Marnier Soufflé - Chocolate Soufflé - Anis Pot de Crème - Warm Chocolate Fondant w/ Nougat Ice Cream - Eggplant & Olive Dip with Crostini - Croque Monsieur - Roasted Chicken Breast with Polenta - Chocolate and Pistachio Tart

My Fashion Juice (January 2011)

I am in no way a fashion expert, but I do appreciate designers that make me salivate when I hear their name and see their designs. I love the styles that can be worn (and afforded) by the classy, self-assured, every-day woman.

We all know that labels have their ups and downs, so this is currently what I'm drinking in:

Trends: Leather, Nudes, Fur (or faux fur if so inclined), all that Glitters
Swimwear: Jean Paul Gaultier , Lenny
xoxo: Sunburst pattern (already purchased for myself) ... and you can put in pre-orders on newer styles for a March/April 2011 delivery.
Shoes/Boots: Christian Louboutin, Ralph Lauren
          xoxo: Louboutin Jenny & Pigalili
Jackets: Burberry, Derek Lam, Gucci
xoxo: Burberry Contrast Linen Trench & Cotton Crochet Jacket w/Contrast Leather, Gucci Kite Cut Overcoat
Dresses: Alberta Ferretti, Herve Leger, Gucci
           xoxo: Ferretti's chiffon dresses
Tops: Armani Collezioni, Black Halo, Piazza Sempione
Eyewear:  YSL
Baubles: Swarvoski, Bulgari, ABS by Allen Schwartz Jewelry, Pomellato (rings), Roberto Coin (rings), Stephen Webster (bracelets & necklaces)

... and to top off my wardrobe, here is what's literally wetting my whistle:
Caffeine: Eggnog latte with an extra shot of espresso
Cocktails:  Belvedere with muddled mint and a fruit puree
Bubblies: Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin - La Grande Dame, Perrier-Jouet Fleur de Champagne

Not to miss: Donna Karan's bodysuits!

Sorellina Restaurant & Bar Review

Sorellina
My Opinions:  I had to come here after Lolita's for some food - What can I say? I am officially addicted to their Duxbury oysters on the very-cold half shell with briny cucumber mini-balls and lime ice. Only 6 come in an order, so it's not meant for sharing ... I think!

I have noticed some new faces in 2011, and believe Sorellina's done a great job hiring. They continue to host an amazing staff who's friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable about the wine and food menus.

This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Boston for years. The service and food is top-notch, they offer a nice wine list, and the atmosphere is airy, attractive, and clean.

Try:  Filet Mignon - Oysters on the half shell - Roasted Beets
     Skip:  Duck - Zeppole

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Oysters - Roasted Late Summer Beets - Foie Gras – Arugula – Carpaccio - Insalata - Verdure – Maccheroncelli – Filet Mignon – Ribeye – Chicken – Duck - Eggplant Gratinata – Ciambelle – Cioccolato – Semifreddo - Tiramisu - Zeppole

Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar Review

Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar
My Opinions:  By now, we all know that I love tequila, so I was excited to see what this restaurant was all about.  In my opinion, it definitely beats Papagayo. The look/feel is dark and swanky, but still a work in progress. It will look even better when they get their couches and lounge items in. The bar is small and narrow, so some extra seating would be helpful.

I was thrilled to order a glass of my college-favorite, Gran Centenario Anjeo. I had to get bottles mailed to me from a friend in San Diego because I couldn't find this label in the states. It's a wonderful sipping tequila that needs nothing else.  In addition, my companion for the evening was also pleasantly surprised to find her favorite sipping tequila on the list too. It's certainly a well stocked bar!

I did try the nachos and they were okay.  I have yet to sit down for dinner, but I was lucky enough to chat with some regulars who have tried quite a bit on the menu. They say the tacos are all good here, but skip the ribs-anything. I hope that changes once the kitchen is settled. It still pulls a decent crowd on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so be sure to make table reservations if you want to have a sit-down dinner.

Hopefully they get their Sunday Industry Night up and running soon! P.S. Competition to watch out for: Tico

     Try:  Bonita - Morena
     Skip: Sticky Spare Ribs

Papagayo Restaurant Review

Papagayo
My Opinions:  By now, we all know that I adore drinking tequila, so I've been eager to try this new restaurant addition in the Four Point Channel.

First off, I was surprised to discover how large the dining room space really was. It looks tiny from Summer Street, but once inside it goes long and opens up in the back. It's very casual and hosts a nice lunch crowd. The food was "okay" and is fitting for the look-n-feel of this place.

Now, to the tequila ... There is an awkwardly placed tequila display case that looks nice on its own, but doesn't quite blend with the restaurant.  In front of the lit bottle-case, there is a hightop table that can host a larger group, but doesn't offer any privacy.

I would come back for lunch, or a quick after-work drink if I were in the area, but this certainly isn't a destination spot.  Que triste!

Mooo Restaurant & Bar Review

Mooo at XV Beacon Hotel
My Opinions:  No caviar this time, but I did make good on my 2011 promise to try sitting at the bar - curiosity satisfied and not likely to be repeated. If you want to eat, it's much better to get a table here.

The scene was busy with a nice, after-work, "mature" crowd, but it lacked a comfort level that makes a bar truly great. The bartenders try, but I think the service is better in the dining room.

The food is always fresh, tasty and filling, but I wasn't thrilled with my meal tonight. The burger patty wasn't as fresh and moist as I expected, and the beet salad had more ice cream-scooped goat cheese than beet slices (I love cheese, but come on! ...and beets are cheap!!).

To note: I saw their private dining room downstairs by the bathrooms and it was "okay". What truly turned me off was their 2010 standard event packet. It had a lot of rules and fees, and was written with little thought for pleasing/attracting clients. Hopefully it will be revised with softer language and less contingencies in 2011.

     Try:  Tuna Tartare - Steaks
     Skip: Hamburger - Beet Salad

Some Food/Drink Tasted:  Hamburger - Sushi Grade Tuna Tartare - Beet Salad - Kobe Beef Dumplings - Filet Mignon - Dry Aged New York Sirloin 35 Days - Side Flight – Endive Salad - Heirloom Tomato, Creamy Blue Cheese, Bacon - Caviar - Exotic Mushroom Mix - Side Flight

Rocca Boston Restaurant - CLOSED

Rocca
My Opinions: Well, that was sudden to say the least.  Rocca Kitchen & Bar in Boston has closed January 2011.

I'd love to know why? Was it the new chef they brought in? The bar was always busy, so was it the food? overhead? marketing? the lack of private events?

My heart goes out to the employees that were not given proper warning. I believe any company should go out with grace and let their employees know as soon as possible, so to allow them time to find another source of income. That's not how anyone should do business nor how you should treat a "team" that kept you in business all these years. <tisk, tisk>

Abe & Louie's Restaurant & Bar Review

Abe & Louie's
My Opinions: I wish this was my kitchen every morning!

I had my first brunch of 2011 today, and it was fantastic.  I got my favorite booth next to the fireplace (yes!) and, although I saw some new faces, they all seemed to fit right in. The service and food is still top-notch!

I celebrated today with my KK-signature brunch dish: Crab Cakes Benedict (scrambled) w/fruit cup instead of potatoes and truffled hollandaise sauce on the side. Now you know what wakes me up on the weekends. Try it, and thank me later!

Happy New Year, All!

Try:  Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes - Bacon Cheeseburger - Bone-In Filet Mignon
     Skip:  Boca Chopped Salad

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Clams Casino - Fruit Salad (no oil) - Iced Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail - French Onion Soup Au Gratin - Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Benedict –  Steak Benedict - Lobster and Shrimp Omelette – Abe & Louie’s Salad – Filet Mignon – Boca Chopped Salad – Blueberry Pancakes – Fresh Lobster Salad - Bacon Cheeseburger - Beef Steak Tomatoes - Sirloin au Poivre - Creamed Fresh Spinach - Fresh Asparagus - Sauteed Mushrooms - Chocolate Dipped Strawberries - Flirtini

Hotel Teatro Review

HOTEL TEATRO

My Opinions:  Free water bottles in the room? Free mini-fridge? Free fresh fruit in the gym? ... SOLD!

What a wonderful boutique hotel. Located across from the new Four Seasons Denver, Teatro offers excellent service, sizable rooms, and finishing touches like a gym, two restaurants, being pet friendly, and being EPA Certified.

I am looking forward to staying here again very soon.

Vox Populi Restaurant - CLOSED

Vox Populi
My Opinions:  This has been a looong time coming - and now, Vox Populi is no more.

I must admit, I'm going to miss that 50 Carat Martini with the rock candy, but I am not crying over this loss. I'm sure we'll see all the young professionals that used to dress up for this place, and eagerly await the "private" parties, haplessly wandering the Back Bay looking for the next "VOX". Whiskey's Smokehouse doesn't quite match the look/feel ... maybe they'll head over to the Rattlesnake or Towne?

Bummer, Dude.

Some Food/Drink Tasted: Pear Salad – Steak Frites – Statler Chicken – Southwestern Chicken – Grilled Cheese – Black Angus Burger - 50 Carat Martini
